Siskin-1

Most years our local Siskins leave for the winter. Small numbers return to the garden feeders in late February and increase in numbers to a few tens as the breeding season approaches. This past winter a flock in excess of one hundred and fifty birds has remained locally extracting seed on larch and alder cones. Until recently they fed high in the treetops studiously ignoring garden feeders. Eventually a few birds left the flock to feed on the nuts and nyger seed provided. Others soon cottoned on to the free handout until in excess of one hundred birds were descending to feed. I found that the only way to cope with such an influx of these aggressive little birds was to give them a bit more space by spreading nyger seed on the ground beneath the feeders.
